IUS – Intra Uterine System (Mirena)

The IUS is a small T-shaped plastic device which slowly releases a progestogen hormone, which is similar to the natural progesterone that women produce in their ovaries. The implant works by stopping eggs being released in the ovaries, by keeping the lining of the womb thin so that an egg cannot implant, and by thickening mucos at the neck of the womb to prevent sprems getting through.

The IUS has two soft threads at one end which hang through the opening at the entrance of your womb into the top of your vagina. These threads are needed to remove the device and are not easily felt. The IUS coil is called Mirena and works for five years - your periods usually become much lighter and shorter and sometimes less painful, or could stop your periods altogether. IUD – Intra Uterine Device (Emergency coil)

The IUD is a small plastic and copper device that is put into your womb, the copper is toxic to sprems and kills them off to prevent pregnancy. It has one or two threads on the end. These thin threads hang through the opening at the entrance of your womb (cervix) into the top of your vagina.

The IUD can last up to 5 to 10 years depending on the type of coil used. The most common coils used are T-safe and Nova- T. An IUD can also be fitted within 5 days of unprotected sex as emergency contraception. It is very effective at preventing unwanted pregnancy. Click here to read more about the IUD...
